Suwanee Georgia

Suwanee is located in
the northwest quadrant of Gwinnett County, near the borders of
Fulton and Forsyth counties. Founded in 1818, the County is named
for Button Gwinnett, one of three Georgia signers of the
Declaration of Independence and the signer whose signature is most
valued by collectors.
Much of Suwanee's vibrancy is a reflection of the growth,
strength, and dynamism of Gwinnett County. With a current
population of 654,000 and projected to grow to 1.2 million by
2025, Gwinnett is one of the healthiest counties economically in
the country. The county is one of only 20 throughout the country
to receive a AAA designation from all three major credit rating
agencies. Nearly 300,000 people are employed by Gwinnett County
businesses, which include hundreds of manufacturing and high-tech
companies as well as international corporations.
Gwinnett County is governed by a five-member Board of County
Commissioners, which meets at 2 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays
of each month at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.
Suwanee is represented by District 1 Commissioner Marcia Neaton,
whose office can be reached by calling 770/822-7001. Lawrenceville
is the county seat.

“downtown” encompasses two distinct, vibrant areas: historic Old
Town with a quaint commercial area along Main Street and the
emerging award-winning
Town Center.
While largely residential, Old Town also includes Suwanee’s super playground, PlayTown Suwanee; the Suwanee branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library; an outdoor pavilion where small community events are held; an historic red caboose, and a charming office/retail area. Through its Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the City of Suwanee is committed to maintaining the unique charm of Old Town and to revitalizing its economic potential. The DDA owns one of the buildings in Old Town and is working to attract private developers interested in recreating the economic vitality of the historic building, which since 1910 has been a general store, silent movie theater, antique shop, and doctor’s office.
Suwanee’s
downtown
revitalization efforts have earned it accreditation from the
National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Program. In
order to be designated a Main Street community, a city must
demonstrate a commitment to the physical improvement of buildings
and public spaces, aggressive promotion and image building, and
economic development of the downtown area.
In addition, the City of Suwanee has received an almost $1 million grant to build a pedestrian underpass that will connect its two downtown areas. This underpass beneath the railroad tracks separating Old Town and Town Center will allow residents and shoppers to park once and then walk to access the amenities of both areas.
